Its a historical fiction set between early 1900s uptil 1989 and it takes place in Japan and Korea.
It follows the life of a korean woman who immigrated to japan before ww2.
The mistreatment of koreans and other ethinic groups in Japan is not widely talked out or acknowledged, so seeing that repersented is nice.
I love the way the author writes everyones povs. There are quite a few evil characters but the way the author writes their perspective makes you understand how they justify themselves
this book rapidly switches povs. In almost every scene every character gets atleast a little bit of pov. Even minor characters like these two sisters who get singular lines but are never mentioned again
The language used is simple but that makes each feeling hit harder. It feels like a gunuine insight into each character's true mind at that moment presented in a clear way.
Each character is unique and it covers topic such as bigotry, survival and enduring humiliatino
